The annual Clinical Refresher Course is named in honor of Ward E. Perrin, D.O., a respected CCOM educator whose contributions to osteopathic medicine left a lasting legacy.
Midwestern University's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) hosted the 79th Annual Ward E. Perrin, D.O., Clinical Refresher Course, October 15–17, providing physicians and other healthcare professionals with updates on emerging medical practices, treatment options, and healthcare technology.
The three-day virtual conference attracted more than 60 participants, including current and retired physicians, Midwestern University physician assistant (PA) alumni, and CCOM Gold Medallion graduates (Class of 1976 and earlier).
The program featured 12 presentations covering a broad range of clinical topics, including infectious diseases, chronic disease management, osteopathic manipulative treatment, and advances in medical technology. Participants had the opportunity to earn up to 12 hours of continuing medical education credit.
Exploring New Approaches to Healthcare
Several presentations focused on evolving approaches to patient care. Cameron Jirschele, D.O., discussed advances in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), including minimally invasive procedures and the potential benefits of earlier intervention.
Ryan Palmer, Ed.D., M.F.A., Director of Education Innovation and Development at Midwestern University, explored how artificial intelligence can support clinical education through timely feedback and competency-based assessment.
Other sessions addressed the diagnosis and management of eye emergencies, recent developments in infectious diseases, and the role of AI in medical documentation.
Supporting Lifelong Learning
Organized by CCOM's Department of Clinical Integration, the annual course provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals to expand their knowledge, explore developments across medical specialties, and strengthen their clinical practice.
George Borrelli, D.O., M.S., FACOEP, Chair of the Department of Clinical Integration, served as program chair and moderator.
Now in its 79th year, the Ward E. Perrin Clinical Refresher Course honors Ward E. Perrin, D.O., a distinguished osteopathic physician and revered educator at CCOM.
